Millennium coin validator recalibration

Coin validators used in Millennium payphones were made by Landis & Gyr, and they are advanced devices capable of programming a variety of coins to be detected (typically up to 18). There are five sensors that detect different physical parameters, which are tested against predefined values and their ranges. The validator then passes the coin number to the payphone's main board, but the monetary value of each coin is defined in one of the MM tables. A typic…

Demo firmware wizard

Demo firmware commonly available has rates fixed to 10ct for a 10/11 digit call and 25ct for 7-digit local call. To edit the advertising messages or speed dial buttons you need a hex editor and some experience. It also has several bugs, like some coins not being detected properly (a nickel recognized randomly as 5 or 6 cents, a dollar coin - 9 cents) etc.

Millennium programming

Programming of a Millennium phone is a bit more tricky than other payphones. Technically, it needs the Millennium Manager to be accessible by a modem at any time. It validates credit card calls each time and updates the rates and uploads CDRs (call data records) regularly. There is a way to program it the way it (almost) wouldn't need the Manager anymore, unless there is an unexpected alarm or the call log gets full.
